Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

(lol, Switts, I've heard tell of quasi-malicious courgette gifting by allotment feeling overwhelmed by their bounty though, so it's not inconceivable that being gifted tomatoes could be more of a burden than a blessing...)

[Hehe, Rae! :) Carole's crop has been grown in pots - at all events, I've not spotted square metres of greenhouse glass in her garden. ;) ]

Related to above, bloody snails decimating my courgette crop :-(

First year of trying to grow stuff, lots of learning still to be done!

Give them a couple more weeks to develop prickly leaves before you plant them out next year, LN?
Or use copper collars?

[The plants are mostly OK but the snails eat the courgettes before they're big enough to be picked. Also they are not deterred by copper tape - I need a hedgehog! ;-) ]

Self checkouts at Morrisons have learned a new trick, "Unexpected item in bagging area". Why is it so unexpected to get a box of garlic dough balls in the bagging area three seconds after a box of garlic dough balls was scanned? I was told to remove the item from the bagging area and then replace it. Three times! Then it set the red light off so a member of staff could reset it. He hadn't gone more than 5 paces before it said it again. Artificial intelligence? I don't think so.

Self-checkouts were invented to give us all high blood pressure.

In Waitrose and M&S the self-serves don't have scales, so you can scan at your own speed, and use your own bags easily.

Waitrose self-service machines are quite sensitive. I put one of their reusable bags (which I had already bought) on the machine and it scanned/charged me. I then had to politely ask the 'partner' to take it off my bill.

An article in the Guardian (of course) describing a humble address as an "arcane" parliamentary mechanism when I'm pretty sure they meant "archaic".
