Charlie - if your log is right then 269 miles is not enough to get you aerobically fitter to run a quicker 5k. A mile run is much more anaerobic. Up your mileage Charlie :-)

After the ultra exploits I'm back in the game. Got 22:36 on a hilly course two weeks ago and a surprise 20:33 today on a net downhill course so no official PB but loads of confidence that I can go sub 21 soon. The course is said to be about 30 seconds faster than a flat course. There is some hope for me after all. 😊

@Uyuni - it was my first ever 5 mile race, so I wanted 35 for no other reason than that it should be easy to check my progress, but I missed the first mile marker, was a minute off the pace at 2 miles, and then suffered through the remainder for 36:39.

@Huntsman - so basically I'm worse at longer distances because I don't run longer distances? That makes sense! :)

PS Should I be looking at doing longer runs, or more runs?

Just build up the total mileage and longest run distance gradually and have an easy week every now and again. Don't worry too much about speed as going by your mile time you've got plenty of that already

Yes it was tough going last Wednesday - most of the folks I knew there were a couple of minutes down on where they normally are over 5 miles so it was a bit of a suffer-fest all round.

Cheers. I have a half marathon in 9 weeks so am going to have to step it up anyway.

This year I've basically just entered all the races I liked the look of, and run on the nights/Sunday mornings when I've been able to, with a group (with a few solo runs added to avoid large gaps). My 2016 race calendar is:

10K
Mile
10 mile
5K
5K
800m/3000m/1500m at track meet
5K
Mile
5 mile
Mile (track)
10K
5 mile
Half marathon
10K
10K

Plus parkruns almost every Saturday. ;)

If you are still trying to go sub-20 this time next year Charlie do the Newstead Abbey dash :-)

Totally bonkers course, lovely gentle straight downhill for the first mile, pass in front of the abbey then an undulating mile out, round a cone and an undulating mile back to finish by the abbey. You don’t have to run back up the hill to the start so a massive net downhill.

Not sure how the hell it is a legit course but it is, County Champs to boot. I did 18:43 :-) :-) :-)

Charlie - just seen your schedule above, loads of races is good but make sure that you get plenty of easy running in between them
