I also found HRT helped with most of my symptoms.

Could I ask Linds (and others) whether it really was a significant help? Reason I ask is I’ve been told it doubles the risk of a blood clot and I’m a thrombophiliac so worried it might be a bit risky.

I couldn’t have most contraceptives because of the hormones in them (oestrogen I think) although nobody seemed to have a problem with me having IVF, maybe the hormones are all different. Progesterone only things were always allowed (tho never agreed with me)

Is HRT something the majority of people do end up taking? As I’m only 39, which is a bit young, most of my friends aren’t yet here and I don’t know much about it really but it is genetic in my family that it’s early so no surprise but I don’t fancy years of menopause symptoms as my doctor mentioned things can go on for ages!

GF I can't comment re HRT (I'm 52 and not menopausal yet - a bit perimenopausal) but I had to stop the combined pill because I get visual migraines and there's a higher risk of stroke. I think HRT contains an oestrogen-like substance rather than oestrogen itself, which means it's not contraindicated in my case.

To be absolutely frank, gf, I could not have gone on without it. In a cruel stroke of fate, my symptoms coincided with my Dad dying, and 9 months or so after he died I was in such a dark place I could not have gone on without doing something. I don't know the figures, but it's certainly not something that everyone ends up taking, and to be honest I never thought I would, but my reservations were a bit silly, it turns out. Your GP should be able to advise risk.

Gymfreak, with you having a know clotting disorder and an early menopause you should be referred to a menopause specialist. I would hesitate to initiate HRT for you as a GP, though I can think of theoretical ways in which the clot risk could be reduced.

Thank you- Vrap maybe I will ask if I can be sent to one and see if there are options other than a flat no/yes. I feel I have already seen every gynae person in Berkshire and Surrey so would be missing out if I also didn’t have a menopause specialist 🤣🤣🙈🙈

I don’t actually get hot flushes at all, haven’t had a single one, and my mental health is very good, but Jesus there are a variety of other symptoms I’d rather not have 😬

That's weird, pinkladykat. I started on HRT at just 49, having had symptoms for around two years. Can you go to a different GP?

LindaD I live in a village and only can go to the surgery that is linked to our post code.

I asked two doctors in the surgery and both is they don’t like to put people on HRT
