Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I am really hoping for that, UC

In fact, today, in preparation for that possibility, I have drawn three circles with my home at the centre. One at each of those distances. It has helped because I can see the possibilities within those constraints.

A total ban would be tough. I have no outside space at all.

Bob!
Isn't the French position no more than 1k from home, but you also need to print a form showing the time you leave home and the reason so you don't go over a time limit

The fine is 135 Euro or 200 Euro if you are caught twice in a 15 day period

Sigh
The road I live on is a 1km loop, but since that's all housing then running around that would actually make social distancing more challenging than the country lanes.

What about assigning an hour's outdoor exercise a day, say, by postcode, working to a maximum number of, e.g., 200 people at a time? Census & electoral roll records could be used to predict numbers of people more likely to take up the opportunity. It'd help management too.

From the BBC website:
‘Exercise outside the home could be banned if people ignore coronavirus social distancing rules, the health secretary has warned.
Matt Hancock told the BBC's Andrew Marr that the government would "take action" if needed to control the virus.
It comes after reports of groups of people gathering in parks during sunny weather this weekend.
….
Mr Hancock said: "If you don't want us to have to take the step to ban exercise of all forms outside of your own home, then you've got to follow the rules." ‘

It was slightly annoying to see that in a caption in the same BBC article saying ‘Government guidance says people should only exercise once a day - alone or with those they live with’ However, despite my hobby-horse of the need for clarity in government statements, this is not the time to be quibbling about the precise meaning of BJ's phrase: ‘one form of exercise per day’

It is up to all of us to do or best to avoid contributing to the perception that the current regulation regarding exercise (see side bar) is being flouted. The BBC's interpretation of excerise once per day is largley consistent with public perception so we should follow that as far as is sesnible. But I do not think this requires awkward arrangments to collect the dog from outside the front gate midway through a run

Boles is broadly correct, I think. I've been wondering how long this lockdown is going to hold before fatigue and possibly unrest set in. I'm lucky -- I live by myself in a comfortable and spacious house, working from home, with a garden, and with beaches and coastal trails within less than a mile. I dread to think what it's like being cooped up in one of the big cities in a high-rise, no balcony, the kids and the dog getting restless, relations with the OH not so great, the weather getting warmer, etc. Heatwaves in April and May are not unknown.

They need to come up with an exit plan so there's something to work towards. And I'd be highly pissed off if, as Hancock is threatening, they apply a collective punishment and put the whole class in detention because of what a couple of the bad kids did.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
