Lots of goosander on the Nith battening down for the coming winter. Do juveniles have broad white bands on their wings? |

Fragile Do Not Bend
In the summer I thought there was a bees' nest in or under a large pampas grass in the garden. Today I noticed some large chunks of 'honeycomb' made out of paper on the ground and a big hole dug out of the ground under the pampas. A bit of googling tells me this was probably a wasps' nest and likely to have been a badger that dug it up. |

Fragile Do Not Bend
Just heard what I think is a Tawny Owl in the garden. My husband then said "yes, I heard one of those a few nights ago". Thanks for telling me! *rolls eyes*

When I run, I see quite often in the Cornish hedgerows, small birds the size of wrens perhaps a little bigger, with dark red bottoms/tail feathers - small wide tail feathers, any ideas what they might be? Wrens don't have red bottoms... definitely not sparrows. Ideas?

no way Redstart at this time of year! One or two stragglers left but all cleared off to southern climes now! From my window at 6pm this evening--c 100 Swallows whizzing around for about twenty minutes--the most I've seen this late from my window! |
