Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I accepted Poirot twiddling with his mouse tash when he was thinking without questioning it. He was from Belgium and it was just what he did.

Surprised in later years to discover it was a mus-TAR-sh. Stupid word

We had a family who came to register a child with the nursery. The mother told us her son's name was Gooey.

Our secretary was a little surprised, but handled it all very professionally. She did, reasonably, ask if the woman would spell the name for her, because it was a little unusual.

I'm not sure how our secretary remained professional when the mother told her that her son's was spelled g-u-y.

I know someone whose parents liked the look of the name Sîan. She's been correcting people for decades because we don't don't pronounce it right: she's called Cyan, thank you very much.

My oldest daughter's name has been pronounced "wrong" since she was a few days old. I made a deliberate decision to pronounce it as it was spelt because the Brummies couldn't get their tonsils round the intended pronunciation and made it sound like a completely different name.
