Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Who gets depressed? i am a sufferer of depression and know how much running helps me.Just wondered how many other Fetchies suffer with depression . Am I alone? what do you do to help? I am on medication long term. I am going to join a running club to increase my social network. Sometimes pounding the streets can be lonely. I guess that if i know others are waiting for me to arrive at the club: then I will make the effort and not put it off. What do you think?

Welcome to Fetch NRGEE

I've found my running has greatly improved since I joined a running club, so I would recommend it for that reason. Hope it helps you.

Good idea. Even arranging to meet one other person for a run makes it much easier to get out of the door and the run seems to pass quicker as well.

I definitely find running helps with my state of mind. Get miserable when I don't run.

And I agree with Gymfreak...joining a club is an excellent way to improve both your social life and your running.

Great plan NRGEE, excercise is a great way of making you feel better naturally, and you will get such a boost from running with other people. Good luck (())

NRGEE you most certainly not alone.

Ontreatment myself at the mo and could well be long term though thankfully I'm only taking beta blockers very occasionally now.

the training definately helps. the time of year def doesn't as the gloom just makes me feel gloomier.

a running club is an excellent plan to get you out and enjoying the sport socially as well.

fetch has been a great support to me as well. people on here have helped me tremendously.

look forward to seeing more of you and to hearing that you've joined a club.

sorry no capitals but typing one handed as my son is leaning on my other arm

Great NRGEE it will help I don't suffer with depression (I don't think so) but have had stress and attended a stress management course. Where it is positively encouraged to RUN :) and broaden your social networks so Running Clubs are good.

me , yes - and running/exercise can/does help

(latest buzzword is green exercise so getting outside into green areas can really help lift mood)

only downside of using running particularly to help manage depression is that it can be a double whammy when injury or illness stops you running as it can bring you down from both the frustration of not being able to get out and run AND the loss of the endorphins that provide the antidepressant effect - so it helps to have a contingency of some cross training - swimming biking or even walking

other downside is if you tend to being obssessive as running/exercise can feed that

but otherwise running /physical activity is a great way to help manage mild to moderate depression (- the more serious sort of depression probably needs a trip to see your GP for a bit of help and advice )

and making it social by joinging a club or group is a very good idea too

good luck with it

You're not alone NRGEE. I've been down that dark road a few times and my moods aren't exactly the most stable now (this in itself is thankfully a world away from the set, focused negativity unbeatable, all-pervading lack of enthusiasm for life during my depression).

Running can be a massive help (both the exercise and even just getting outdoors for prolonged time). Keep it up!
