Like every other runner that likes gear I’ve been looking at the carbon shoe “news” last few years. I’m not so interested in the speed aspect, but more the aspect of less “strain” on the legs and feet on longer runs. Apparently they are more gentle to the body as well. Any thoughts on this? |

D'you mean the shoes with carbon plates in the soles, Bowman? If so, I love running in them (it's fun, wheeeeeeeee!) but haven't had any reduction in post-race DOMS from wearing them.

Yes I do. Ok so post race doms is the name ![]() I’ve heard in different forums that that’s a big thing, less strain after hard or long runs. Maybe that’s not the case for all then. |

It's something other people say they've noticed, but it's not a universal experience and it's something that's so subjective it's impossible to rule out a placebo effect from having spent over £200 on a pair of dayglo daps.

I don't know much about carbon shoes, but I misread the thread title as "Cartoon shoes for better recovery?", which I think is a great idea.

My 2p - happy to be torn apart - that's what forums are for ![]() Being pedantic, no matter how easy, any run is not "recovery" - the term recovery run is misleading. An easy run still has a training / stress effect. Strain / stress is why how we kickstart development - dedicated practice and progressive overload through a combination of volume and intensity. So far as carbon plate shoes lowering the stress - that would make sense to me. Outside Online ran a couple of articles linking improved running economy to faster times - through experienced based form or carbon stabilized cushion shoes that take load off the legs: outsideonline.com & outsideonline.com Based on that, I think a carbon plate run would be less taxing on the body but that perhaps depend on pace - most don't to well at more comfortable paces. The gait cycle is pretty complex - if you look at what happens with pronation and supination around the hindfoot / talus there is incredible complexity. I worry that too much time in carbon plate or shoes that take strain off supporting musculature could be a slow creep to atrophy and maybe difficult to pinpoint injuries. With just a minor deviation to pronation, we compensate that can put strain on the arch or the tibia and cause knee issues or even lower back pain. They are all supported by large muscles so I think might take a while to manifest. Pronation link: thestudentphysicaltherapist.com |
