Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

There have been references recently to the Bristol Bridges challenge on the Thames Bridges challenge thread. I would really like to do this route, or maybe a cut down version of it, when circumstances permit. This thread is a bit of a placeholder for now, but maybe there would be interest in a Fetcheveryone outing one day ...

I'll add some words to the sidebar later. The full route is around 45km and crosses 45 bridges and is documented in a book.

It would be possible to eliminate two bridges (the M5 motorway bridge and the one bridge ("Portway viaduct") nearest it) and leave 43 bridges in a little over half marathon distance. Whether that can be done without breaching the "cross each bridge once and once only" approach remains to be seen!

Not a book, SteveC, but this seems to document it with links to maps and instructions. bristolcivicsociety.org.uk

About This Thread

Maintained by ♪♫ Synge ♪♫
For discussion of the Bristol Bridges Walk. As at 2021, the full route visits 45 bridges in a distance of 45km. There is a reference page maintained by Bristol Civic Society (see link below) and there is also a handbook which can be purchased through that page or on Amazon: Jeff Lucas's "From Brycgstowe to Bristol in 45 Bridges" published by Bristol Books.

The route includes a large loop of around 20km down the River Avon to take in the M5 motorway bridge at Avonmouth and one other, so it should be possible to devise a route which excludes these and offers 43 bridges within around 25km. Sounds like an idea for a run ...
