We tend to find if everyone is happy, attendance is low. If something 'controversial' is happening everybody comes!
Hmm, I wonder if free chip butties would encourage more folks...

We stopped having ours in a pub after loads of folk got hammered one week and the election of committee members descended into farce

To be honest I feel bad, because it is a very good club, but it is very hard to get your voice heard unless you have sat there for 20 years, and if you do go and do say something the entrenched don't like, it doesn't go well.
So the entrenched ask you to come, ask you to put yourself forward for the benefit of the club, and then if you come with ideas/change etc. You're trouble. So they want your vote/quorum, for things to remain, but not input
Not for me.

My club got about a third of the membership at the last AGM, it was combined with the annual prize giving . I can see why many people don't want to get involved as it can be a lot of hassle and gives us more of the things we run to get away from. Stress, decisions, politics and difficult customers etc.

I have to attend what with being on the committee, we tend to get a quorum but that's about it. I would be in favour of changing the constitution to be informal and not need reports from Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership person and only have matters arising. I don't know if there is some legal thing about having to have a Treasurer's report.

Standing room only at our last AGM. You have to attend if you want a vote. The draw for London places takes place at the same time which seems to help with attendance.

"The draw for London places takes place at the same time which seems to help with attendance."
We link ours with the Christmas do. And each year the committee finds a way to make the draw even more complicated for themselves.

My club does free food and puts it on after a club run which works well. A good proportion of the active membership show up (think there are a bunch of "sleepers" too, no harm in that IMO they pay their subs after all).

It's normally the clun constitution that will drive the requirements, unless others (eg UKA?) put requirements on clubs? Recommendation (as above) - keep it short, no surprises, link it to a social event or activity (prizegiving etc) as a reason for people to attend. 'Free' food is always a good pull ...
