Our vet phoned me a few days ago about the result of Jet's last kidney test. There are no easy answers and I got the impression she was trying to set my expectations that if we continue to manage his arthritis so that he is not in pain, it is likely to further adversely affect his kidneys, and that he may suddenly go into a very fast decline. The alternative medications don't seem to be as effective, and we're going back for another test next week to see whether there have been any changes. I can already see Jet's legs getting wobbly, so I'm very reluctant to cut back on meds that enable him to run around on the grass and enjoy a good sniff for a little while each day. |

It's a difficult one, isn't it Helegant. We had exactly the same dilemma with Lizzie, our first Lab. In fact we were taken aback at how fast that decline was when it came. Nonetheless we felt that there'd been enough quality of life while she was on the meds that we did if not the best thing, then the least worst. The arthritis would have caused ongoing pain and discomfort and that seemed unkind.

I'd go for shorter but happier and less pain; over a longer, less mobile life.

I think cackleberry is spot on. As LD says we try to do our best for them for as long as it is still the best/least worst

Thank you all. That's been my approach to date, but it's good to know that I'm not an outlier.

Bloody dog has got a death wish! She came in from the garden with something in her mouth, clearly something she knew she shouldn't have (which isn't unusual) As she was rolling it about, I realised it was a bug - a bloody wasp! Idiot. Managed to get her to leave it and remove its soggy, limp body to the bin, without anyone getting stung. I thought it was bulldogs that are meant to chew wasps, not pointers!! |

Spicy sky raisin. Helegant, I agree with the others. Shorter and happier. Such a sad dilemma ![]() |
