The name "Tanzania" was created as a clipped compound of the names of the two states that unified to create the country: Tanganyika and Zanziba Yes, picked that up from the CWG opening bash last night. |

[We have a photo of Mr JK's Grandad taken in Zanzibar - he was in the merchant navy and travelled all over the world.]

Zanzibar was the port for the export of slaves to Persia and India, controlled by Oman.

I think we need to talk about View Masters at this point. My only recollection of Zanzibar is a View Master image. Possibly something to do with drying coffee beans. Don’t mock. It was a long time ago

Cripes. Turns out they were still making View-Masters until three years ago. I mis-read that, surely? If anyone needs me I’ll be down the google rabbit hole. |

It only takes about 15 minutes to get by (folding) bike from my apartment in Brussels to central station. Whereas it takes about 20, and has nastier hills, to get to Midi. I already knew that the trains that take me home get to Central about four minutes after they leave Midi, so combined this gives me an extra ten minutes to get my target train if I get it from Central rather than Midi, as I have been doing for the last two years. |

On 4 July, Austrian actor Robert Hoffmann died aged 82. He is most famous for playing the title role in “The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe”, which was first aired in the UK in 1965. Anyone over the age of 45 or so will remember this show being repeated on kids' school holiday TV for years. Theme tune |
