Thanks, folks. So I need one that has a top speed of at least 10 miles an hour, can incline, preferably electrically and that folds up.

Are there any manufacturers that I should avoid?

the bigger the motor the better :-) a nice long belt, an automatic incline, a fan and speed up to 16kmh is pretty swift (unless you're Rach E !! )

i inherited a manual treadmill & it's incredibly hard work - less than 8 min miling & you cant get it going !!!

use it once a year - would much rather be outside running.

I'm wanting one as well but without a big budget to spend. There's an online offer on at Comet just now for this one for £299, does it sound OK? Ignore the fact it's listed under Health and Beauty products :-)

it looks ok but i would ask what size motor it has.A 2.5 is good. I have had mine since 2005 and it's brillo. I did pay £1000 for it but it is excellent.

We bought ours from here fitness-superstore.co.uk

We visited their northamoton showroom first (they have others too) and things we looked out for were how sturdy it felt generally, what the incline increments and speed increments were, how long and wide the running area was and what sort of built in prgrammes it had. We ended up with a pro-form something or other about 4 years ago and have had no problems at all with it.

Second vote for fitness superstore and I'd definitely try them out - all the same comments as mulbs really, if your wife is comfortable running on it then it's more likely to get used rather than gather dust. I paid £1200 for mine quite a number of years ago and took some time choosing it. I used to use it a lot but not so much now and it's still fine. They have come down a lot in price these days. Horizon ones are pretty good for the money and deals on the NordicTrack seem
ones are pretty good. Unless they've really changed the products, I'd avoid the Reebok ones. Although horses for courses. I also bought a folding one, but only fold it up when cleaning or decorating!
