Nellers
Mrs Nellers is saying that she'd like a treadmill for her birthday and because I'm a runner I'll know what's what and be able to make sure I'm getting her a good one.

Trouble is I've run on a treadmill twice in my life, and both times were checking out new shoes in the shop!

Mrs Nellers isn't a runner at all but wants to get fit, and if we've got one in the house I might finish up using it when the paths are icy too I guess.

What do I need to look for and how much should I be expecting to spend for what I need? What should I be careful of and avoid? Are second hand treadies a big risk or do they hold up to the strain well?

Thanks, folks.

Has Mrs Nellers run on a treadmill before (ie does she know how horrid it is)?

I think you need to spend quite a lot to get a decent one. About £500?
I run on a the treadmill in the company gym a couple of times a week and it's ok because it's big and chunky and solid. I've run on cheap rickety treadmills before and it's horrible. If you go much past a walk you have a feeling that it's going to fall to bits.

She used to go to a gym for a while and loved the treadmill and she married me. This is proof positive that she's a bit strange.;-)

Top speed is something to consider - I went for a York one that could do 16kph since most of the others in it's price range were a fair bit slower. Mine had a powered gradient adjustment too, which seems to be something some manufacturers ditch to save on the selling price.

You need to have a budget of about £2k to get a decent treadmill - I have a Life Fitness F3 and would thoroughly recommend it.
