Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I don't think I've ever found it intimidating but then I was ok with being last in 1500s and 800s when I started if it meant I got the opportunity to race (entered 15 and 8 at the county champs in 2012 knowing that was likely by quite a bit for example) In 2012 I even did 100 and 200 races with no illusions that I could be a sprinter which I'm less likely to do now. I was able to start with opens hosted by my club so maybe that helped. Also TBF I'd be less likely to enter a race where everyone was way faster these days as I value the competition element a lot more now and there are more opportunities than when I started. I certainly don't mind racing younger athletes at opens though.

There's a bunch of opportunities on Open track depending on where you're based and how far you're willing to travel. Also may be some on Entry 4 Sports, Roster Sports and Race Results. You can usually see other entries so you can gauge the standard. There might be others on club websites as well.

I've mentioned this race before but if you want to do a track 5000 where you will have good competition, MK5000 should be a good event.

data.opentrack.run

It's had a break for a couple of years but you should get close racing with good pacing and then get to watch elite races after if you're able to stay till the end.

Thanks SPR. I've also spotted a masters meet at Yate which is pretty close to me. It's full of older folk, so if the diary allows, I might get myself up there and try a track 5k.

Definitely something that should be tried for sure.

I think i saw your hat at Sale Sizzler @allmatthew any closer to Sub-18

My watch reckons it was close to 32deg at 7.30pm.

I massively struggled in the heat and not much focus on running so despite sensibly easing up the last mile (7mins) was at 175bpm still.

Worst 5km I've ran in 3 years maybe? 20:32 and every single step was rubbish. Deciding to run there with a club mate wasn't the best idea I've ever had but even still, it was shocking.

I'm running the last Sizzler and if it goes worse than today I might hang up my running hat!

You must have had my cap in sight, I was only a few s ahead but presumed you'd been ahead & out of sight from the start!

The heat and run there in that heat probably explain it & hopefully they won't all be as hot, equally not wanting to wish the summer away.

I'm entered into MK5000 on Saturday. Did the Midlands Champs 3000 last Sunday on a gusty day running 9:34.09 with splits of 3:12, 3:23 and 2:59 (last 600 in 200 splits was 35, 36, 31). Was a two man race for M40 so was tactical.

I reckon 3000 in 9:45 should be reasonable target if I chose a pace. Pacemaking in my race is set for 16:25 so 9:51 at 3000 which hopefully I can kick on from.

That’s rapid SPR! You didn’t say whether you had the other V40?

Sticking with the pacemaker sounds sensible, especially given your capacity to finish fast

Thanks BathMatt, yes, the other M40 made it tough by making the last 1000 fast; I sat on with the plan of kicking in the last 100. As I tried to come past off the last bend, he started moving wide so may have ended up in lane 4 or even 5, but found another gear with 50m to go to get past for the win (0.61 in the end)

We knew each other from two 1500s last year where I beat him and crucially finished faster over the last 400 so that set the terms of engagement where I was going to trust my finish and he was going to try and burn me off. The meant that he didn't want to go for it earlier.

Yeah that's my thoughts too re the 5000. I had the opportunity to go into the 15:50 race but that would be risky as if everyone goes fast, I'll be left with no help or have to go too fast. I think it's better based on my strengths/ weaknesses if I'm running well to be a bit too slow initially than a bit too fast.

Top running SPR, sounds like you've got the measure of your opponent (despite him putting up a really decent effort to nulify your advantage). Good luck in the MK5000
