Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I'm slightly happier to be in a world where 300 police officers who weren't sure whether what they might be doing could be murder or legitimate action have handed in their weapons.

That said, maybe (some of) the rest of them are blithely unaware that the way they operate is potential unlawful.

I'd like to hope that being trained up as an officer who can carry a fire-arm has some sort of easy opt out for those who don't want to continue to carry one so that no-one ends up forced to carry a loaded weapon.

On HS2 - if the justification was the modernisation of victorian infrastructure to bring parts of England together to be better organised and less reliant on flying, then Manchester / Leeds absolutely need to be part of it. London to Brum might be a good idea in principle, but it's hardly going to solve long term issues.

As it stands it's not even London to Birmingham, hence presumably the quote about it taking longer, as the last few miles into London might not be completed.

Donald Trump has described Rishi Sunak's U-turns on a raft of net zero measures as "smart", insisting the climate crisis is a "green new hoax".

It comes days after the prime minister confirmed he would delay a ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars by five years and weakened targets to phase out gas boilers.

The former US president posted on his own social media platform Truth Social: "Prime Minister Sunak of the United Kingdom has very substantially rolled back the ridiculous "Climate Mandates" that the United States is pushing on everyone, especially itself.

"I always knew Sunak was smart, that he wasn't going to destroy and bankrupt his nation for fake climate alarmists that don't have a clue.

A ringing endorsement from Trump must be worth thousands of votes these days. For Labour.

Meanwhile Trump leading Biden by 10 points. The pollsters ABC have caveated it, and it looks really like an outlier. But an unpleasant outlier certainly:

All the others have them neck and neck. Surely not?

My confidence that ā€œBiden beats Trumpā€ feels more and more shaky these days. Worrying times for the US and for the wider world in general. A good 40% of US voters appear to have become completely unmoored from reality.

Biden’s only selling point is that he isn’t Trump. To outsiders like us you’d expect that to be more than enough but to the American public they see a lame duck against a guy who seemingly got things done.

Whatever happens with HS2 up north*, it surely has to continue into Euston? Making it terminate at Old Oak Common would be a complete clusterfuck! It's bizarrely isolated from anywhere useful and local transport from it is severely restricted. I pity anybody who tried catching the 228 bus!

* And the project really should have started with the north section to make it fairer.

Can you imagine explaining to an alien that while every EU country has high speed integrated transport net works we have an amazing stretch that goes from outside London to Birmingham ish

Good to hear someone's thinking of the 4%.

Sometimes a million pound windfall just isn't enough.
