CON+UKIP+BP (i.e. hard right and far right parties) = 283 = still less than a majority LAB+GRN+LD+SNP+PC+CUK (i.e. centre and centre left parties) = 348 And I' argue that BP+UKIP % would go down as soon as they start trying to come up with actual policies (as UKIP have actually been seen to have done). And I'd reckon on GRN and LD going up as their policies got more exposure. |

nobody who goes out and votes is apathetic. I'd argue the other way, in a PR system the far right wing vote would go up as would the far left, the LD/CHUK vote would get squeezed. |

I'm with fozzy, we have to have PR giving Brexit and UKIP their rightful representation- I think (as on, on the continent) they would find a high water mark of 15%-20% they could never go beyond, BUT I admit it could be wishful thinking. Once upon a time these isles shied away from the extremes of both wings. I'm naive enough to think it could happen again, without us being some middle of the road Lib Dem manifesto. You can be radical and take policies from the left (land value taxation), and the right (universal basic income) and the center (citzens' assemblies, PR). Anyone who disagrees with land value tax (fearing they might be taxed unfairly) should read the epic Guy Shrubsole article in the Guardian. theguardian.com |

We can debate what vote share they would actually get, but my only point was that more than a sixth of the parliament is not something many would describe as a small proportion.

UBI is a Green Party policy too, so not just an idea of the right.

Agreed Goofee, and these days it's far more likely to be proposed by greens and the left, but Milton Friedman was the first major proponent and Richard Nixon the first president who actually tried to introduce it (which is absolutely gobsmacking). He almost got it through as well, it passed Congress and the Senate got cold feet at the last moment.

The issue there is not the amount - it's the fact that his salary was paid from the proceeds of a fairly large fraud. (And not to blame the victims, but it was obvious from looking at the adverts that it was all pretty dodgy, so I find it extremely difficult to believe that an MP would not know that the money came from a dubious source.)

Recall - byelection. That's a marginal, Labour could win that. There's already a possible Tory byelection over expenses coming up: politicshome.com He's got a 8,000 majority (Mercer has a 5000 one). They could well be down to 3 MP majority (including DUP) within a couple of months. |

The issue is not the amount?! £85k/yr for 4hrs/wk not an issue?! Really? On top of a supposed full-time job where he's earning very good money! The fact it's from a dodgy source is simply not surprising, given the inordinate amount of cash for so little time. |
