Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I’d recommend you find one of the mara threads on here if you want to get in to a decent debate and get some great feedback. If you really have time to talk this over and share some data come in over here :-)

Looking at your training you seem to do all your training runs at the same pace. Maybe vary it up at bit, do short recovery runs, tempo runs, long runs, interval training and shorter marathon paced run.

Definition of a long run..?
The following is what I completed before tapering: 1 x 14m, 1x 16m, 1 x 18m, 1 x 14m 1 x 18m, 3 x 20m, 1 x 23m.
Weekly mileage would be 35m building up to 50m in final week before tapering. Tapering 3 weeks before marathon.

Best half marathon time is 1hrs 44m. Last half marathon was 2019 at 1hr 54m
Can’t quite understand that I can achieve a 23 mile run in 3hrs 39m – yet in the marathon – I cannot.

strathearnharriers.org.uk
I have been following the above training plan which does include; recovery/moderate paced & speed work.
Thanks very much Windsor Wool – will try my best.

Take care & many thanks.

Hi Windersor Wool, Just noticed that the thread you mentioned is, 'the-sub-3-15-marathon-thread..'. sub 3hrs 15m is a time I can only dream of... I'm not in their division - never mind their league.
Thank you.

Don't take advice from me! I am rubbish at marathons. However, the best ones I ever did were when I trained running more than marathon distances. I ran 28 or 29 miles a couple of times in training. I also tend to run out of energy, and found that carbo-loading (horrible) also helps. To be honest, I am not cut out for marathons so I will stick to things that suit my physiology and psychology a bit better.

The last marathon training I did, my aim was five long runs adding up to 100 miles, the longest being 22 miles. I did my penultimate run of 22 then Covid hit🤬

The training plan looks fine and your half marathon times suggest sub 4 is realistic. I agree with others that your long run pace needs to be slower. If you want to do some marathon pace as part of your long runs do it at the end of some long runs. Last 5 miles.

I was thinking that I would need more carb’s – but not too sure…
My, ‘best time’ for a half marathon was 1hr 44m which was quite a few years ago. I think age/time has caught up with me. Yet I still believe that I could manage a 4hr 15m time – especially as I have managed a 23 mile run in 3hrs 39m – and felt OK after. Not giving up – not yet anyway!

Very much agree with this in terms of slowing down your pace but keeping some Marathon pace in.

Good day,
I’m hoping that you may be able to help/advise me what to do?

The last 4 marathons I have ran have all resulted in me running out of energy and fatiguing at around the 15/16 mile mark.
I was aiming for 4hrs 15mts. Halfway (last 2) 2hrs 1mts / 2hrs 5mts
Training went very well. Followed the training plan to the letter: strathearnharriers.org.uk
My long runs 20mile plus (longest 23miles) were all at 9:30 miling ...
