Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Boab - impressive 10M sub-LT pace! very nice. I've met a stray horse ont he canal towpath in Leeds before ... not easy to get around!

And Davie & Bazo ... subLTs also looking very good!

jog-on ... I've done some sub-LT type work in the 2nd half of my Sunday long run.

Anyway, instead of a 5th Sunday with a 20+ LSR, I did a sort of extended sub-LT session ... 16.3 miles at 79% maxHR and 7:44/m.

To canal, 1.15 miles, 7:40/m

Good stats Dr. Dan! :)

So Im doing my 20miler this eve with 10 miles threshold built into the second half. Is it reasonable to need to fuel for this to get max benefits of the threshold activity or should I do the lot unfuelled (as I have been for easy long runs) Whats the pro's / cons to either option? My target race is my first Ultra (45miles) in about 4 weeks if that has a bearing on anything!

Thanks as usual :)

I wouldn't bother fuelling, but I've no basis for that other than I never bother.

I've had to drop this weekend's ultra race, so sub LT for me tomorrow as usual. I'm going to have a crack at the Great Scottish run in October, and hopefully be around about the 80 minute mark.

Personally, I'd would not opt for any "during run" refuelling ... just be reasonably well fed in advance.

I only ever tend to fuel in marathons (normally gel at 7,14,21) but I reckon I'll probably take a gel at my next half too see if it makes the last 5 miles any less painful. I'll drink water in a half but couldn't stomach anything, even water, at 10k pace

Did my first speed session in months at lunchtime. Now I know why I enjoy HADD base training and MP work so much. Ouch!

Aye, not a great fan of speedwork myself Tizer. Good on you for getting it done.

I don't fuel in races, although I will in my next marathon. At Edinburgh mara last year I did it as a 16 easy/10 hard training run, and used gels which really helped in the last few miles so I'm up for using them next time I race a marathon. For anything under I wouldn't feel the need. I'm not good at taking on food/water even at half mara pace. I'd maybe manage a swig of water in a 10k, but that would be about it.

davie - so have you never taken anything on board at any marathon *pre* last year's Edinburgh?

Just water Paul. I tried a mouthful of lucozade sport at a drink station at a previous Edinburgh and immediately felt sick so didn't have any more. At Paris 08 I just assumed a big city marathon would have more than water, which they didn't, and I grabbed a couple of jelly beans from a wee lassie at Loch Ness because she looked annoyed that nobody was taking any :)

I'm absolutely ravenous when I stop though. I actually had to physically fight myself from eating the orange peel when I got a segment at the end of Paris, and I even ate a banana after Edinburgh. If you knew how much I hate banana that would seem a lot more spectacular than it sounds, lol. TBF I'd also missed breakfast before that Edinburgh race because my hotel wasn't serving when I had to leave for the race.

I will definitely use gels for my next marathon, but they need to be caffeine free. My guts don't react so well to running in general, never mind running and caffeine combined!

This feels like a topic we've touched on before, but I think there's a good chance you not doing yourself justice (yet) over 26.2 is connected to that. I *know* Ron Hill back in the day etc. etc. etc. ;-)
