Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Good show Baz. :)

My garmin went tits up and won't switch on. I have another which doesn't pick up satellites though. So I decided this was a chance to break in the treadmill. Somehow I managed to contrive two fuck ups that backed each other up. I think the speed on the treadmill is highly inaccurate, and I also managed to put the wrong max HR into the old garmin. So I set off running at what should be 6.50/mile pace, and the HR showed 81%. Perfect. I did my 10 miles, and when I've loaded it into fetch it says I averaged 151. Sure enough, when I changed the garmin back to bpm it shows 151 as well. So I've basically done 10 miles at 76.7%. But apparently that was an average 7 minute miling (got drift later on and had to slow the treadmill).

Not sure that I'll get on with treadmill running at all.

I dread the day my garmin packs up.....I am on my 2nd and hated the week or so without one.

I am sure you will get used to the treadmill davie and to be honest, much as you wont like it, it will at least allow you to keep regular running which was the original aim....

I treat the 'mill as a means to an end, and it has been invaluable since my wee one has been born. I would have missed hundreds of miles of training had I not bought it. I tend not to do anything over an hour on it as the boredom factor is massive so I organise my training week around the days/times than I need to use the mill.

I actually found running on it no problem at all. I was on it for 1:20 including a warm up and cool down and I loved all those stats flashing in front of me. :) It's just that there's no way I just ran 7.00/mile at just over 75%. I've missed out on a work out now. I'll work out what fudge factors I need to add for treadmill runs over time until I'm happy I can match an outdoor run. Also strava doesn't count treadmill runs towards challenges.

I'm about to order a garmin. I can't live without it! Lol :)

The fudge factor may be incline. I always have mine set at at least 1%.

I'm with Boab on the incline on a treadmill. I always used 1% and some advocate 1.5%. I found once I'd converted kph to mins:secs per km, then to min/mile, it was about the right pace that I expected. I did all my intervals and tempos on treadmill in the winter of 2010/11 (the bad winter) building up to spring 2011 mara and only did my long runs outside. Longest treddie run was about 10 miles (which for me was 90 mins). But then, I wasn't training to HR.

Maybe some are badly calibrated though? But I haven't seen folk mentioning that so much? :-)G

When using a treadmill I tend to keep it at 0%. I realise that the effort is not the same as on the road for the equivalent pace. My theory is that if I up the pace for the same equivalent road effort then I am getting quicker leg turnover. Quicker leg turnover contributes to muscle memory, and thus may help to be a little faster on the road.

good treddie discussion - thanks for posting.

Had a good 10m subLT this morning - HR levelled out at 82.5%, pace 7:44mm. I am hoping for more improvements over the remaining 8 weeks until Frankfurt, then I can make my mind up between an easy 3:30 or a risky 3:15...

That's an interesting link Moleshome and a lot of good stuff in there. My own 1% incline is based on HR, nothing else. I know what paces I will run (roughly) for each HR level I want to run at. So I set the pace and I adjust the incline to get the same HR effect that the pace would have outdoors.
