Well, there is a wiki, my thought was, if you took a cardboard cut out of the UK and hung it up, where would it balance.....that turns out to be in Lancashire, if you exclude or the far flung islands, it still turns out to be Lancashire.....Whalley! Perhaps the cardboard cut out needs to be weighted according to fetch populations.....and someone with a brain and a BIG calculator.

Indeed. It'll have to be a Glastonbury style 4 day event to make it worthwhile.

Actually, rather than geographic, perhaps it should be transport based.

I don't think cutting it out in cardboard is quite accurate enough. Most of the hills and mountains are in the West (Wales) or the North (Northern England, Scotland). I think you'd need a 3D model to take account of these and then put a pivot in it somewhere further North and West.

But what about population density? Geographical centres are all well and good but the carbon footprint will be smaller if more people can travel less far...

Or indeed public transport hubs or road connectivity - south of Birmingham and we would be very unlikely to head there on a Friday by road due to sheer hideousness!

Most northerly point of mainland is Dunnet Head 58.67 degrees north, most southerly is the Lizard at 49.96 degrees north - so mid point is 54.3 degrees - draw a line between Kendal and Scarborough and you aren't far off - north of that is the north of mainland, south of that is southern half.
