Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Sorry, road car larks.

"The fastest road car in the world revealed - and it's electric

•Rimac Rimac's CTwo supercar can do 0-60mph in under two seconds and has a top speed of 258mph."

bbc.co.uk

Yes, C4 can be really annoying coverage. I like Billy Monger though, a bit of real (current) driver insight.

Yes, what is that thing they do where they sort of preview something that's going to happen in next bit of race?

I do hope that another team can challenge Mercedes soon though. But Bottas and Hamilton duking it out will be good too. You just don't want a single driver to dominate, because that can be boring. :-) G

Ah, yes - road car.

PErsonally I'd be happy to see all electric F1 - providing it maintains its position as the "fastest" form of motorsport on a GP track. Though there really is no motivation to rip up the formula in terms of removing the ICE as part of the drive train whilst ICEs remain the dominant form of propulsion in cars sold.

When the balance is tipped and there are more EVs on the road than there are ICE cars, F1 will have no choice but to follow I suspect.

I was kind of thinking of it as leading rather than following larks.

Some of the Energy Return in F1 has made its way into everyday cars. And they are effectively electric hybrid now, which is also pretty common in today's cars. If there were a point at which they said, "Putting carbon fuels in a televised sport is just wrong" would certainly send a strong message. You wouldn't televise bull fighting. I think burning fossil fuels is close to being anathema, soon, if not already? :-) G

Yes, but hybrid systems in F1 cars came after they had hit the mainstream on the road (and in endurance car racing) didn't it?

The roar of the F1 engine etc is still a huge part of motorsport. In fact, even when electric cars are the only things on the road it wouldn't surprise me if petrol driven cars are still raced for many, many years.

I don't disagree that there is a world where it could lead the way in terms of motorsport - I just don't think it will happen.

Fair enough. Do they "roar" even now? Not compared to the big V12s? :-) G

For those that prefer more overtaking and racing that's closer to a contact sport, the Touring Cars are on ITV4 again this Sunday.

btcc.net

I've only recently rediscovered the Touring Cars (I used to watch them at Knockhill back when Plato was a youngster and Tarquini was rolling his Alfa off the track) and it's still a good spectacle on TV!

My son in law works in the touring cars - for Handy Motorsports. Had a day at Oulton Park last year - great fun.

I said for my 50th I wanted to go to a Grand Prix as a present for myself (I've never been). But I wanted to go to Belgium or maybe Germany, so it was getting a bit pricier. I've been to Brands Hatch where my step dad used to race in Formula 3000 I think they called it. Very noisy in pits! :-) G

For my 40th I did a road trip to the German GP at Hockenheim with my son who was 12 at the time. Drove down on the Thursday and arrived late that evening at the campsite (which was rammed already by that time, so we were squeezed into a tiny slot) and spent three nights with very little sleep whilst Europop was played basically through the night. The campsite was amazing, all sorts of wierd and wonderful camping setups (including F1 Sauna!). Had my son been 16+ we'd have had a more interesting night life, and probably the same amount of sleep!!

We picked Germany as a) it was around my birthday weekend anyway and b) the cost of seats for a weekend package were quite reasonable by comparison with British prices etc. The only downside was that the tickets at Hockenheim were fixed to your seats in the grandstand, and there was no concept of "general admission" to get around the track and watch quali / practice from different vantage points.

That's the only F1 race we've been to, highly recommended though. I was a bit underwhelmed by the stuff that went around the race (I was expecting live music in the evening, maybe a funfair etc etc, but it seems the Germans didn't go in for that) but I think things have improved on that front.

50th for me I'm hoping to do Le Mans for the weekend taking my then-to-be 22 year old!

My best motorsport day out was the Gold Cup at Oulton Park (only about 10 miles from home). A fab range of cars, great access to the circuit and close to the cars in the pit lane area, and the circuit is just gorgeous. I can't remember if it was Kimi or Mikka H that said that their favourite circuit was Oulton Park, but it would be fab to see a modern F1 car around there. Not been to see the Touring Cars there, but I'd expect that to be a top day out too.

That sounds great larkim - the Hockenheim trip, I mean. A friend and his son go to Le Mans every year and have a ball.

My husband used to work for Firestone in F1 back in the days of Jimmy Clark, etc and has some great stories.
