Speaking as a former head of museum collections (and librarian), please do give local history groups first refusal on things like diaries and photographs. They will be best placed to make the disposal decision without rendering such things 'lost to the nation.'
I'm thinking of the fabulous Victoria Wood film based on an 'ordinary' woman's diaries, but the name escapes me.

can anyone please suggest what to do with/recycle/repurpose/get rid of 6 dining chairs? They're mostly wooden - and they're in good condition - but the seats on them are fabric and because they don't have the fire label on them anymore, charity shops won't accept them. I've advertised on Freecycle but to no avail.
I don't want to just chuck them away but I also don't have any use/space for them, and Mrs GordonG is getting most annoyed at having to peer past chairs to view the telly...

that's a good suggestion Pix, but (and not wishing to put up a barrier to your suggestion) I live down the end of a quiet close where no one passes by

Gordon - take them to your local recycling centre. It's likely they have a little shop where they resell such items.

I’m afraid old furniture is pretty much worthless even if in decent nick. We found a refugee charity to take a few items to help kit out a household.
Our seat cushions are all knackered now so I’d take them if local!

Today I've cleared out several big bags of soft toys. The good ones washed and given to a charity shop, the cruddy ones have gone to the skip in the sky reserved for tatty teddies and a few I've kept for my granddaughter. My 'kids' are 33 and 31, so it was time!! (I did feel quite emotional though, as there were so many memories wrapped up in them 🤔).

Well done stilldreaming. I still have all my teddies at my mum's (I am 33). I can't bear to throw them away!

We actually have a furniture restorer near us that does classes. I presume they could take them for practice pieces, so that might be an option (and someone might want to take the refurbished ones home).
