Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Where I use the term 'attacked' in my above post I mean lunged, jumped up, snapped, barked etc. Actual biting has only happened once or possibly twice that I can remember....

Thanks for your input
Seems a few of us have some experience of unwanted attention, good to know its not just me!

For me I would count attacks as bites and being charged at growling and bearing teeth - that sort of thing by a big dog where there was nothing I could do, just rooted to the spot in fear.

Just googled dog attacks near where I live in Poole in Dorset and it would appear that there have been a few in the last few months that were a lot worse than what I have experienced.

Reading those accounts I think I will consider myself lucky and apply some wisdom to changing my routes so as to find a safer way to get to work!

LOL Goofee...

I've had a few of those...they sound so silly when I type them out really!

'Its because you're your running, because you've got a head torch on, because you're not lit up enough......'

Give me strength!

More likely because the poor dog is not trained/socialised enough to feel safe around others so as not to show aggression me thinks

Been nipped once - running down a wide riverside path, plenty rook to pass each other ( :-)G - the Wol around Currie ), just a steady run, not sprinting.

See a women with a dog off lead ahead, think nothing of it. When women sees me, she immediately puts her hand up and shouts Stop, Stop ! I don't stop, carry on running but a bit slower, dog doesn't look interested in me, she continues to tell me to stop, then just as I draw level the wee dog jumps over at me and nips me on the ankle.

After a few profanities at the dog and her, her response was it was all my fault as she had told me to stop and I hadn't. I tried pointing out that she should be able to control her dog if she was exercising it off lead, or at least muzzle it so it couldn't bite/nip, but she was adamant it was my fault.

I threatened to follow her home and then report her to the police, at which point she shut up and headed off.

I like to run away from traffic and it’s often in places where dogs and their owners walk. 99% of the time I never have a problem and often meet the same dogs.

Once i had to change direction as the dog owner refused to put their over friendly dog on a lead so I could get past without falling over it. Apparently I didn’t own the path and their dog was just playing, I tried at least 5 times to get past it. The dogs owners were really unpleasant about it.

I decided after a few similar incidents of over friendly dogs it’s best to say nothing because if you do they get defensive.

Had one small dog with its teeth round my ankle with its owner saying he won’t touch you, not strong enough to break skin but it was sore and it took some restraint not to kick it off.

I like dogs and a few incidents hasn’t stopped me running some lovely off road routes.

Claypole - a mixture really. Plenty of off-lead ones. I am in the habit of saying "good dog" and making eye contact with it if possible, whilst not altering my pace and not doing anything different with my hands. I reckon it's also a good idea not to run between dog and owner, to help reassure them I am not attempting to attack. Touch wood, no issues so far, but I can see how an aggressive approach from a dog can be very unsettling.

Our dog isn’t interested whatsoever by runners and doesn’t go near them, he actively tries to move away from most people and other dogs so I have no worries about him off the lead.

I also don’t mind other dogs being off the lead however expect them to be trained or the owners to be able to control them. If your dog is going to run at someone, regardless of if they are running or not, they shouldn’t be off the leads. Some people are terrified of dogs (and rightly so in some cases, I used to have a phobia having been bitten around 5 times as a child) and it’s unfair for them to be subject to it when they want to use the paths.

I get very annoyed when I’m running and people see me (or don’t see me actually for above reason that I think dogs should be on lead if they run at people) and don’t try to get their dogs away and they then run at me or around my legs. Mainly as I may end up kicking them if I can’t move out of the way in time. (Also risking injury as Il throw myself to the side to avoid kicking them).

I always run off the path if they are on leads as the owner recognises the risk but don’t feel I should have to move off the path and into the mud for dogs when the owners can’t be bothered to do anything about them. I will make comments about it as I pass the owners.

Cheers Fetch

Yeah properly rattled me last night, I was just stood still, did the whole calm, nice dog thing, just instinct I think when faced with a big aggressive dog.

Yeah can relate with you K5 Gus.

Thanks for all your comments, feeling calmer already :-)
