Also, a lot of the wildcamping advice that gets given in good faith (e.g. bury your poo) is not considered appropriate in many upland areas these days for a variety of reasons. In areas with an arctic ecosystem (e.g. Cairngorm plateau), buried poo will not biodegrade well, and it will have a significant adverse impact on the ecosystem. Add to that the fact that visitor numbers have increased hugely - 40 years ago there were only a small number of people wildcamping, but now there are many more. If all the wildcampers each night in the Lakes buried one poo each, we'd all we tripping over poo-divots constantly when out running! So unless you are somewhere with the right kind of soil, and somewhere properly remote (e.g. bits of Knoydart), people should be prepared to bag their poo up and take it home. The Cairngorm poo project did a good job of publicising this, but not many people do it elsewhere, and I frequently see people advising others to "take a trowel" etc. The advice is well meaning, but simply isn't appropriate any more. |

That’s Lakes BBC piece is depressing. I can imagine what it’s like. The “we saw something on FB / insta crowd”. I saw Kilian scrambling on insta - doesn’t mean I’m going to do it! I’m guilty of exploring here in Spain more than before - local gorges and the like. I like to think I’m not an idiot so did research into the route etc but we saw many less prepared than us!

Interestingly, a similar but lower profile Wainwrights attempt will start next week by an ex-clubmate of mine who has opted to do this as an alternative to MDS which was the plan until covid19 cancelled that. track.trail.live Starting in Patterdale on Tuesday. |
