Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Base training - how long is worthwhile?

Yes, the male predominance on the AF thread is striking and consistent with the published evidence.

While macho attitudes sometimes play a role, I think the cardioprotective effects of eostrogen are probably quite important. The cardio protective effect possibly acts via promoting healthy blood vessel walls. It is easy to see how this might account for a sex difference in coronary atheroma, but less easy to see how it might influence AF. Maybe disordered capillaries might also play a role in the aberrant conduction system in AF.
It is tempting to speculate that cardioprotective effects of oxytocin might play a role. If so perhaps an affectionate hug should be part of recovery – but this is a romantic notion that goes a bit beyond the evidence.

We seem to have travelled some distance from base training... doubt I'll ever do enough training to get this condition!

think I'll ask my doc if he'll put me on that therapy. Do you think I could get a choice on the NHS or would it just be Nora Batty or Nurse Gladys Emanuel :)

anyway - roughly back on topic I did 7 miles at sub-70% HR on Monday night and wondered how long it might take before I'm able to do this without pace decay. At my stage of recovery *pace* is a word to be used in its broadest context;)
