Does your public library offer anything in way on online (downloadable) ebooks scribbler? I know we (all public libraries) do in wales....choice may not be as brilliant as audible, but not bad.... we use borrowbox and rbdigital..

You can keep the books even after your subscription ends. I joined for a while years ago and got one book a month. I can still listen to them now on my phone or via Alexa. Currently working my way through Middlemarch when insomnia strikes.

Thanks panad. I suspect my little village library won't but the central one in the city certainly does. I'm currently downloading lots of podcasts which I also enjoy.

I found 2 old book gift cards and luckily they haven't expired! Typically now that I have money to splurge I couldn't find the books I really wanted in Waterstones, ended up with: Milkman by Anna Burns The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton Dead Lions by Mick Herron - I actually wanted the 1st book of this series but they didn't have it and I needed to make the amount up to more than £20 Still have £20 to go so I'll try the massive Waterstones at Piccadilly to see if they've got the books I went in for: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller The Wych Elm by Tana French Slow Horses by Mick Herron |

I’m really enjoying Milkman after restarting it. It demands a careful and focused read, and the tension just ramps up and up, so I feel it’s better for me to take it in in short sections. But the writing is brilliantly evocative and unique and totally fitting the book.

It is, it is. It's a wonderful book. Possibly easier to appreciate for those (like me) old enough to remember the constant reports of the Troubles.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is very a very engaging story even though you wonder what the hell is going on half the time. I couldn't wait and ended up downloading Closing Time. Not as good as Catch-22 but still has the nonsensical madness of the original. Yossarian hasn't changed, he's still a smart-alec and colossal pervert. |

Good heavens, I'd forgotten his being a pervert. (What about the maid with the lime green panties? That was straight enough, wasn't it?)

I feel like Yossarian is being unfairly branded by that comment.
