I was pondering the similarity with “a little princess” by Hodgson Burnett yesterday, written a good 50 years before. I still think Secret Garden is a cracking book but i reckon little princess, with all its making friends with the mice in the attic, would fit a lot more in the poverty porn bracket but then it had A Moral, whereas this i think was Capote experience of being a charity case
