I guess I’d best wear my bleepy thing next time. I’m fairly happy that I’m doing a mile at a fairly consistent pace but as I’m not feeling that crescendo (any more) it implies I should be putting in a bit more effort throughout? And I probably ought to break it into sets?

I don't wear any kind of watch, timer or bleeper and am conscious that people coming past me swim at a much faster stroke rate than me. And they kick much more. Basically I'm buoyant and have a long glide which means I can blag quite a long swim with minimal effort (with the occasional 50m blast at the end of a session just for fun). But... I'm getting to the point where being unsplashily slow is losing its appeal. I haven't done any kind of drills or 'structured' sessions since around 1986. Does this matter? Well... I've just read the Gradual Crescendo page and seen an ad for a bleeper, and realised there is a whole world of training that is a mystery to me. It's a bit late to change things round in time for Bantham Swoosh, but I now suspect I might improve with a bit more structure and a plan. There is a plethora of expensive kit to potentially help - fins, buoys etc. What do you on and what do you use? |

I have pull buoy, beeper, fins and hand paddles and use them all fairly regularly through Sept-April. Now you’re a Harrier why fon’t You try on of the coached swims? Probably will have to wait til we start in Sept but it was the best way for me to learn all the drills and how to use the kit. |

Pull-buoys, fins, paddles, ankle-band, kickboard, snorkel. Don't use any of them to best advantage

Few swim updates: Fritton Tri yesterday. Genuine novel experience in that I was first in my AG out of the water - never happened before. Mass start so I did not know it at the time, glad I didn;t as I might have lit a cigar and had a glass of Champers in T1! TIme was pretty modest so I suspect an unusually weak field in swimmers in my AG, but I'll take it. Also posted fastest bike split in AG and was at T2 10-11 mins in the lead - needed about half of it mind as I ran terribly......more pleased about the swim lead than the overall AG win PInk Mist this morning 10x300. Great East Swim next Saturday - doing the 5k. Lovely Keep swimming kids.... |
