Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I was driving along a dual carriageway this morning and they've put bollards in the left lane to take you off and up to the roundabout today and painted arrows on the road. No forewarning of the change. This was obviously done to facilitate getting on the dual carriageway on the other side of the roundabout - there's hardly any run-in and the dickheads always took it as their right to just pull out in front of you if you were coming. Hello! You should give way to the traffic already there! :-o

It's a good idea and should have been done years ago but they could warn you.

Various bits of the smart motorways story (as reported by the BBC):

- the motoring lawyer who complained that "And it's an easy way to extract fines from people, because once you're clocked over the limit by the camera, it's very difficult to fight against that." - yes, that's known as evidence

- the AA, on the one hand "questions need to be answered about the money being recouped", on the other hand "Only a couple of weeks ago one of our members broke down on a smart motorway. There was a red 'X' up but they still got hit from behind." - well I damn well hope there was a camera there to get the idiot driving in the lane with the red "X" up.

A couple of weeks ago we were stuck in traffic on the M1 J25-J28 smart section watching the flashes of the speed camera on the opposite carriageway as cars exceeded the 50 mph limit. It was every five or ten seconds, and the cars being caught must have been able to see the reflected flash of the previous idiot before they themselves got caught. No sympathy from me - if you don't want to get caught keep to the speed limit.

The poor operation of smart motorways.

As an example, I cite the M5/M4 junction at Bristol. Just before the M4 joins the M5, the speed limit is often reduced to 60 because there is 'congestion'. This causes drivers to slam on the anchors from 70mph *cough* to 60, as that gantry has a speed camera.

There is then precisely no congestion at all (apart from that caused by the deceleration of traffic due to the sign.)

The next gantry then shows a 'derestricted' sign and everyone speeds up again.

I've never been caught for speeding on such a section, but could certainly understand the anger of anyone who was. You could be legitimately doing 70, then get nicked by an arbitrarily reduced speed limit. The claims in the BBC article that managed motorways are closely monitored are clearly nonsense, or they'd turn the damn signs off when traffic is flowing normally at 70.

OK, most of the time when there are roadworks on the motorway, there is no actual work taking place yet you have to slow down to the given speed as there are cameras in operation. No excuse for not knowing. It always amazes me that even though I end up travelling at exactly the revised speed limit, every car around me seems to add 5-10 mph to that. I hope they get caught.

Research has shown that hitting the breaks on motorways, having been travelling too fast, has a direct link to congestion further back. A bit like a wave. So that further back, cars travelling at a normal speed also tap their breaks and before long, the slowest cars are doing the same. Eventually, the traffic grinds to a halt. Which is why, when you start moving away from the traffic jam, there appears to be no reason for such a hold up in the first place.

No motorways up our way so it is extremely frustrating to find yourself behind some prat crawling along at 35-40 mph on a 60mph road and totally oblivious to the 2 mile tailback behind them! At least the tractors do tend to pull over in lay-bys to let traffic past.
