It fills a nice gap between the summer sales and the Xmas hard sell. Bonfire night is generally much more eco-friendly, using mostly recycled materials (for burning) and as a result doesn't make any money for retailers. Especially since the sale of fireworks is so restricted and everyone is encouraged to go to public displays rather than have their own.
