...and it's a constant fight even with my own kids to remind them that our car uses petrol not gas and we take out the rubbish not the trash. I've given up talking about TV "series" because everything these days is Season 1, 2 or 3...

[But of course, "ticked off" means something different to our US English speakers!]

I also hate the word gotten, but apparently it's an old English word.

People moaning and complaining on a local news story about a new leisure centre/swimming pool in the planning, which will replace the current one built 40ish years ago. Such complaints as "they should keep [the current one] open for those of us who find it easier to get to" when the new site is less than half a mile from the current one, and on the majority of the town bus routes, as well as being closer to car parking.
The driving instructor who thought it was a good idea to take his obviously very nervous pupil, who couldn't bring herself to go more than 15mph, out on a major road at rush hour. Poor girl, and caused a lot of disruption as people were having to find space to overtake her.

Our new record. Lined up 5 interviews and not a single candidate turned up. £10 p/h permanent cleaning jobs. Usually 2 or 3 out of 5 would show up.

How much do you think you would have to raise the salary to get people to turn up?

I think i would need to be at £11 p/h. We are pondering. It has ramifications for other staff, including gardeners etc, and then makes it necessary for most wages to increase at a difficult time already. However, running a business isn't meant to be easy so we are looking for creative ways of encouraging applications. There was a time when we use to have to book a room at the jobcentre and run through a load of applicants, but that time has long gone. I have a feeling things might change by the near year but that is a gut feeling.
