Colleague who has removed all the formulas from a complex excel spreadsheet. She doesn’t know what she’s doing and I expect she never will

[I've got one of those, Fields. Stripped out my formatting and made a bloody mess of a simple task]

[JK - I will ask the owner of the spreadsheet if she can make them non editable but not sure that’s possible as sometimes we need to change the cells the formulas reference depending on the scenario - and that isn’t something we can build into the formula using IFs]

um
[Fields - the owner can protect the specific formula cells with a password - shared to others if wanted. Not shared with those not to be trusted. Post on the spreadsheet thread if you want help, or 16 different opinions ![]() |

[Cheers um - the problem is every user will have a genuine need to amend the formulas - sometimes - to target a different cell depending on a particular scenario. So the only solution I can see is the user having enough access - and knowledge - to overtype C12 to F24 or whatever. They have the access but not the knowledge currently. I did think about asking on the excel thread but Nested IFs - which is what I think will be suggested - are not the solution - for reasons to complex to explain concisely]

The number of Excel spreadsheets I create with formulae and Word templates which people tamper with is incredible. You create the form, use developer tools and protect it so they only have to complete certain areas yet someone ends up changing everything because they think that headings and sections need touching up (which they don't) and mess it up for everyone else. Then I have to fix the mess because no-one else is capable.

Not only has nice Admin girl messed around with my simple Excel sheet for tracking allocated work, but she's also allocated a load of work to someone who doesn't work on Mondays. That was a fun half hour fixing her mistake.

people who use Americanisms that only serve to confuse things. Example: i was asked by email today whether, when a form is returned to a team, they can "check it". I was just about to reply that there probably wasn't a need to review its accuracy when i realised they meant "tick it".
