Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

"Your password will expire in 14 days. Do you want to change it now?"

There is some software I use at work (but not everyday) and easy to miss the password expiry memo - at which point access is locked so need to phone IT to get it reset (as it runs separately to the users general Windows log in). Very annoying!

One of the systems I used to use at work was quite an old one that gave users no warning at all that their password was about to expire. If you forgot to change the password in time, you had to write an apologetic email to your manager’s manager asking for a reset.

I have somewhere in the region of 15 different logins and passwords for systems used with varying degrees of regularity. They run on different timescales to change, from 30 days to 90. And there are about three different numbers I need to call depending on which system I've forgotten to change this time. Nightmare.

I once worked somewhere where a particular system needed a password change everyday. Then you are told not to write passwords down. Sometimes like that it's a necessity especially when you have to use capitals, lower case, numerals and symbols to make it harder to break.

it's when I can't remember a password, go to reset it and the system is 'password must contain capitals, lower case, numerals and a special character' and then the message comes up 'password can't be the same as a previous two passwords'.... if you had reminded me I needed a special character I wouldn't have had to reset it in the first place!

This is why I let Google suggest and save passwords for me, for websites it's not critical that I get back into. That wouldn't be an option at work, I realise.

Flipping hell. Would the system allow you to use passwords like word01, word02 etc through the month?

Our system forced you to change your password monthly; I downloaded a spreadsheet of British Birds and went through them at random....

Sigh
My brother used to work as IT support at a 6th form college, and used the names of Russian philosophers as his passwords as he was confident that none of the students would be able to spell them correctly anyway :-)
