Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

You don’t need to use headlights in a 30 mph lit area.
Highway Code Rule 113
“...use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified”

[The issue in modern cars is part caused by the "auto-on" setting for lights. So it turns my "running lights" (sidelights in olde English) in anything other than the brightest of sunlight, and the streetlights don't give enough light to tell the sensor to shut down the headlights either. Also the newer LED lamps the council installed in most areas only give pools of light, since they're focused "down" rather than spreading like the good old sodium ones were. So you do really need the extra light in most places around here, regardless of the "lit" status.]

Ugh, yes, those LED lamps are horrible. When housemate uses the balcony for a smoke of an evening, there's one lamp that is placed perfectly to beam directly into my eye - never happened with the old lights...

[Irrespective of the Highway Code, to all other road users, pedestrians, etc - a car with headlights at night is far far far more visible than one without.

However, I do agree with the original comment about them being ridiculously bright - there is no real need for them to do that.]

the really bright headlights alongside speed bumps in the road make it look like the car behind is "flashing" you or one coming towards you temporarily blinds you whether driving or walking. Modern superbright lights are a nuisance

I often think drivers are on full beam coming up the hill here. Just stupidly big cars with stupidly bright lights.

Nicholls595, I suffer with glare from oncoming car headlights. I bought some clip on filters for my glasses which do reduce the glare quite well.
