Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I'm with you on any form of conversation before breakfast, Chris. And that sounds particularly hard to cope with.

The adverts stuffing up my ability to get on Fetch from my work computer.

(Fortunately, the CCG magnanimously refrains from policing our Internet access on our personally owned devices.)

The term "metric marathon". The marathon distance has been preciselly defined in metric, not imperial, since it was fixed in 1921.

[I've never heard of a metric marathon - but I'm guessing it's 26km and 385m??]

@Duchess - miles aren't metric, although they are exactly defined in metric units (1,609.344 m). For some reason, the IAAF has a slightly different definition of exactly 1,609.32 m).

@macca 53 - close, it's 26.2 km.

Potted marathon history - the distance used to vary between 40 and 42 km, depending on the course that was picked. In London in 1908 the organisers picked a route of "about 26 miles" (it was actually less than that in reality) finishing in White City Stadium, but changed the configuration of the finish at the last minute, making it "about 26 miles, plus an extra 385 yards". When the IAAF decided it would be a good idea to have a fixed distance, they picked the famous London race as a blueprint, and ignored the "about" part, so the official distance of exactly 42.195 km was born.

I was starting to think about the kilomathon (26.2 km) being a metric marathon. Not an event that really appeals to me.
