Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Hi, I was diagnosed with under active thyroid 20 months ago, just after doing London Marathon in 2012. I am now feeling almost back to pre VLM 2012 but have a long way to go to get fitness back. As far as I can tell everyone has a different journey when dealing with thyroid problems and some people just carry on as normal, others are just knocked out, personally I was somewhere in between. There doesn't seem to be a one size fits all approach to feeling good but will be interesting to hear others experiences.

Hi HiJac and welcome to the thread!

When I was diagnosed last year the only other person I knew that had it was my mum. Always surprised how many other people have it too.

I had an overactive thyroid (Graves Disease) which came about after I received an infusion monoclonal antibodies as part of clinical trial.

Interestingly I gained weight with an overactive thyroid but suffered very badly from hair loss, muscle wasting, sweating and palpitations. I had a thyroid ultrasound done and the doc found 100's of small tumours over my thyroid. I was then prescribed radioactive iodine - I'd had my family and I quite fancied the 4 week isolation the therapy offered me!

I now have almost zero thyroid function and I take 200 mcg of throxin daily. This is quite a high dose I understand but it seems to work for me. It took me about a year to get to a stable thyroxin level. I've other health problems but my lack of thyroid function doesn't seem to hold me back.

Just found this..... I was diagnosed with Addisons disease (inactive adrenal glands) and under active thyroid in 1991. At the point of diagnosis I was really very poorly and if my Mum hadn't been so persistent I don't think the correct diagnosis would have come in time.

I think being diagnosed aged 20 helped - I perhaps didn't realise the full significance of everything at the time and just got on with life. My recovery was pretty swift and I've been well (from an endocrine perspective) 99% of the time since then.

I'm on 175mcg thyroxine and am pretty symptom free. I'm a steady (4h30 ish) marathoner and am runnign my 9th marathon in April.... Will keep an eye on this thread - best of luck everyone!
