Hi all, I have just been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and I was wondering if there are any runners that have the same condition? I've been prescribed Levothyroxine 50mcg but after a month of taking them I don't feel any benefit from them at all. I think my level is 6.4.
I do find it a bit strange to have found out that I have it but looking at the symptoms they do seem to fit but not all of them. There are a few symptoms that if I have them, really drive me mad and question whether I am doing things right or wrong eg; cold hands, mornings are terrible for me just very sluggish and takes a while for me to wake up. Also, for some reason I just get in a muddle about stuff that really isn't or shouldn't be hard to understand at all. Luckily I don't seem to be putting any weight on which I'm glad about
Running wise it's just seems to have made things even more hard work without doing anything different than what I have always done. Feels like I'm constantly in marathon training!
Does anyone else have it? If so, how do you cope? Will things eventually get better?

Hello Yes they will get better we usually check the blood tests again six weeks after starting thyroxine or changing the dose
In my experience, even when the blood tests are normalised it can take a litttle whiile for the symptoms to normalise

Thanks PH.
I've just had another blood test (Wednesday) so I'm waiting for results.
I hope things will get better as I get so frustrated and tired about doing things wrong when I really shouldn't have any bother over it. I'm sure people are getting very annoyed with me.

Just looked at RW and found a lot more info and response.
Currently reading through 8 pages of it all!
Thanks PH. You have put a few entries on the RW's thread too

I was diaagnosed last September, started to feel better after 6 weeks but then by December tiredness crept back along with itching skin and joint aches, upped dose and now feeling almost normal:) It really affected my running last year before diagnosis, as if I had lead in my legs, not sure what the levels are but on last test 2.9 I think!?!

I have this. I was worried when I was diagnosed that I would be permanently sluggish and muddle headed but those symptoms went, I think after a couple of months. I feel absolutely fine now and don't notice any effects, just tiny tablets to take each day.
It should be nothing to worry about once they get the dose right. It is early days for you and the dosage you have started on is low.

I am quite surprised about how small the tablets are to have such an effect! Glad it's not just me feeling sluggish and muddle headed though.
Thanks all.

The head fuzz does go, I used to describe it as feeling like I had downed a glass of wine quite quickly!
