Unfortunately, that won't work with my Garmin 310XT since the cable is for charging only, no data transfer possible, and my computer won't recognise the 310XT. That's why I had to use the route mapping method. Tomorrow I'll be using my Garmin 235 which does have a data transfer cable.

For those wanting to put a route into their Garmin Edge I've used the ridewithgps instructions to drop a route onto my 830edge. It was was easier than I thought once I realised you have to turn off the device and restart it to get it to convert the file in the new folder to a new file format in the courses folder. ridewithgps.com
