Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

It's silly question time, I'm afraid. Posting on here as this is a safe space, and I won't see any eye-rolling! ;-)

This is the chart for the mittens I'm knitting, I'm on the thumb of the first mitten at the moment, and the silly question is: how do I adjust the thumb for the other mitten so that I don't end up with two left-hand mittens?

Would reading the chart for that side of the mitten backwards do the trick?

I'm looking at that and thinking, I could do it but I couldn't explain it.

Here's an attempt to explain what I have in my head:

So I would start knitting in the direction of the green arrow, then when I get to the mid point orange arrow, I would start from the other side and knit in the direction of the purple arrow. Does that make any sense at all?

Would flipping the chart mirror image do the trick?

Ooh, how did you do that? That makes more sense, because the pattern on the back of the mitten doesn't stop at the mid-point, but continues past it.

If I can't work out how to flip the image, would it work the same if I just knitted from right to left instead? It would do my head in, probably!

I waded through dozens of websites, and found the answer: you just read the pattern from left to right, to make a matching mitten and not an identical one. Until I see that work out in practice, I will be prepared to rip it all out and start again!

Does it not tell you in the pattern somewhere how to work the second mitt?
