LMH - same as my ankle joint, they told me not to run period but I compromised and gave up ultra marathons to slow down the process, hence the lack of long runs and high volume.
Mark - no faster than 1.27, if it is the right day you will neg split or drop off loosing a minute and run 2.55 and if it is a bad day this should still let you grab 2.5X. I see LMH says a minute, if you want to play it safe go no faster than 1.26.30 and no slower than 1.27. We both have a lot of races under out belts. If you go faster than 1.26.30 and blow yourself it will be a 3.10 and what might have been, excessive time banking does not work in the marathon.
Good luck

SKR
@Mark when i ran 2:55 in Chicago, the advice given to me was to run it progressively:
First 10k - 6:45-50 to start then building into 6:40 by the last mile. second 10k - 6:38-41 third - 6:36-39 fourth - 6:35-38 final 1.2-1.4 finish with what you have...
I've learnt that the pace at which you run the first 10k can either make or break your marathon, banking time almost never works for me.

I don't think you can bank time in a marathon either SKR.
jda - I have osteoarthritis in my hip too (diagnosed by x-ray about five years ago now) but that doesn't really bother me fortunately.
Gobi - my consultant said that mine wasn't caused by or made worse by running (apart from hills but he also said I should avoid using stairs where possible too) and to do as much as I could/wanted to for as long as I could/want to - but at some point both knees will need replacing. This year just seems to have seen a rapid decline for some reason despite my running less miles than usual. I'm tempted to blame the little bit of speed work (I use the term loosely) that I tried to introduce as people kept telling me I should be doing more than just run easy.

We are a pair LMH, the problem with ankles is they can't replace them :¬(
YET !!!
Although not caused by running exactly mine is caused by sport since birth and sadly mine is made worse by EVERY step I take. It is becoming obvious that my right ankle is going the same way. If I was a wise man I would just ride my bike but, although I can largely live without the ultras I'm still not ready to be a non runner!

In no uncertain terms I was told to stop and that a limp is my future, I thought about it in 2013 when I ran 130 miles in 6 months and realised that even in a limited capacity of average I still wanted to run.
I have some very dark and painful days, usually means I need a few days without running :¬)

I have always run my best times on as even a pace as possible. Its amazing how much time you can lose in the latter stages if you go slightly over

On the whole I'm fairly pleased with my pacing, but even so...4 manchester runs...there's a minute or two dropped in each one.

Really apprciate the feedback guys, thanks 1.26/ 1.27 was around what I had in mind after easing myself in the first 5 k, so think I'm drawn towards that.
