Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Dv - stalking SmileyBob's training log, looks like he's not running too much now. I don't know if it's injury, or what.

I'd agree with the general Tom Williams thing that most guys could probably get to sub 3 with appropriate training (which implies commitment to do said training, the knowledge/ discipline to train right to avoid injury etc.). Age would affect it eventually, so I'd say anyone starting to look from obv young age, up to maybe mid 30s can do it. And of course many in their 40s and beyond can achieve it too.

But I'd think eventually you'd run out of years. As we get older, you've got to train smarter to fit in the volume and intensity of training, while still avoiding injury.

I think it takes 2- 5 years to achieve your best in marathon training too. You can't do it all in 12 weeks, imho!

Good luck for any who are still on the upward journey (I'm on my way back down the other side, personally! But that's through lack of interest / commitment, rather than because it's not possible or anything.) :-) G

Swimming helps with the back and an Ironman is on the bucket list of events but I'd be happy if I could run 5k pain free at the moment.

This was a thread about a study/article that said "any normal bloke could get to sub 3 with a bit of training". A deliberately provocative premise, but the debate that it sparked in Fetchland was always very reasonable, of course! :-) G
