Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I didn't say it was natural SPR, that's why you need to work at it, practice, do drills, possibly even be coached. And also why making a change is difficult, and as I opined about 1,000,000 pages back, possibly risky! But possibly worth doing. Albeit carefully! :-) G

*wry smile * my argument against Pose still holds Several years on. It’s basically sprint training dismissing one important fact. Ground reaction. Of COURSE there’s a push as well as a pull!

Oh my... What is natural vs What has been naturalised?

Kids who have not worn shoes for very long tend to do the Pose technique very well.
In school I was told to heal strike and stride, I felt slower and also thought I hadn't understood very well. So practiced what was not natural and made it natural. Also found I liked wearing shoes with thick soles, hence from a marketing angle it is good to push a shoe that you would have to frequently purchase when the soles wear away from the big impact. A study on the African runners might help, as poverty has meant they lacked shoes

I am glad I worked hard at understanding Pose (did 2 courses, and helped out in 3 courses) as it definitely has meant that I have been able to do many more marathons and miles without the normal dead leg fatigue + without injuries that plagued me on my first 4 marathons + have been able to mostly wear any footwear + my footwear has lasted waaaay longer than when I used to heal strike.

Interesting run free...we weren't told how to run when in school. Hubby always told me to heel strike when walking...to avoid tripping and falling over! I've always run in a Chi/pose running hybrid.

"speed = cadence x stride length".

Nope, stride length increases as a result of travelling faster! Cadence x angle of fall = speed = stride length

This is what I meant by 'true' stride length earlier. Imagine you're running along at a certain pace and you decide to go faster. What do you do? Reach your leg out in front of you, increasing your range of motion? Well, no, because that's just increasing your over stride, breaking your momentum and creating a longer lever over which you have to get your body weight. Maybe leave your support foot on the ground longer to increase your range of motion? Well, no, because that means it will take longer to re-position your foot to enable you to change support and go into your next stride, as well as increasing your time on support.

Increasing your stride length as a specific action just means increasing the distance between your feet, which brings no benefits.

Nonetheless, speed does equal cadence x stride length by definition, assuming stride length is properly identified. I agree completely that trying to increase speed by consciously increasing stride length is a waste of time and energy.

Stride length is naturally increased by getting stronger and having the ROM to produce the right shapes as any fule kno.
