Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

SSLHP, I'm familiar with the Pose slant on this - read the books, been to 2 training camps.

"stride length increases as a result of travelling faster" is a nice little mantra to stop people trying to over-stride, but is demonstrably not a literal truth.

Watch a triple jumper as they go into the hop and skip part - massive decrease in cadence with big increase in air time and only slight drop in speed compared to their approach run.

It's not running, but clearly someone can run with similar bounding mechanics to increase air time and hence stride length (and not reach out with leg which everyone agrees is pointless).

I sometimes have dreams like that. My strides lengthen and turn into bounds, still staying low but with ever-increasing air time. When they lengthen enough, 20 metres or so, I can push up and take flight.

Always a disappointment on waking to realise that I cant actually do that.

He travels a long way in the air because of his approach speed (and a push up). Imagine how far he'd have travelled if his approach was a jog. Speed creates the stride length.

if speed itself doesn't increase your air time and stride length, then you could argue, why bother with a run-up at all. Just do a hop skip and jump from the start line?

In simple terms what could the average social runner do to be more efficient at running?

SSLHP,

I think you are rather missing the point.

Once last try -

"Cadence x angle of fall = speed" doesn't hold up, cadence can drop right off if a runner starts bounding as per the video. A runner can even bound from a standing start. Springboks can move really quickly whilst bounding.

"stride length increases as a result of travelling faster" yes it will do, but that is not the whole picture - the bit it misses is air time which is caused by how much vertical movement a runner generates.

Cadence and stride length (based on speed and vertical lift between steps) are things that a runner can effect and the more universal equation 'speed = cadence x stride length' holds true in all cases.

for a more serious runner, rather than the social runner, yes, cadence, which, as above has as much to do with strengthening, flexibility, ROM, and well, more running :-), actually I am a bit of a convert to trying to get people to incorporate fast running into their regimes, just little sets of 20,30,40ms, and strides.

Simbil, I seen to recall a certain J Huff being dismissive that triple extension could minimise vertical oscillation because it didn't fit the Pose model. ;)
