Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The three things you list are important, though there are several additional elements of efficient running and each individual needs to identify what their own issues are.

With regard to your point about engaging the glutes, the practical question is how do you do this. Your note about arms provides a pointer.

Arm swing and leg swing are coordinated in the brain, and linked via a direct musculo-fascial link through back muscles and fascia. Because we have much greater conscious control of over arm movements, focussing consciously on a well-organized powerful arm swing can promote effective contraction of the glutes. A well controlled forward swing of the arms is as important as the back swing.

Nice to see you after so long Canute, I was wondering where you'd got to. :)

I was wondering that same thing - everyone always talks about "engage the glutes" but no-one ever tells you how to.

AR, I had some helpful feedback that my running style exhibited a sitting position. By doing certain exercises I find that glutes are activated during running and big benefits result. It's a bit Chi, getting a big muscle to do a job.

:) Interesting - we've had Pose and Chi discussions in the dim and distant past. I've tried both and found Pose made my achilles more unhappy than it liked to be.
