And when do you know it's time to change them? I'm sure this question has been asked before, and I'm sure the answer is 'it varies' but I'd like some thoughts please!

That is something that varies with shoe, running style, surface etc... What are you running in and on what? I used to get 500 miles out of Lunarglides, but in Fivefingers I will run until I wear through them

somewhere on here there is a thingy that say how many miles, on a verage, a pair of shoes lasts before they are retired . But within that there will be huge variation, depending on the runnner, the surface etc.

WA (Windassisted)
Pounding pavements, probably 400-600 miles. I start feeling niggles where I don't normally when they are ready to be replaced. Usually in my knees.

Hi Fleecy, 500 miles is the number you see banded about the most. But, it depends on many things. For people that are injury prone or *coughs* carrying a little excess weight, then they may need to consider changing them before 500 miles. Some people run 1000 miles in them, some people wear them until they fall to pieces and don't bother to log how many miles.
I change mine at 500 miles.

It does depend, I know of people that get 1,000 miles+ out of shoes and others that struggle to get 200 miles out of a pair.

Fleecy I change mine when the tread on the mid-foot sole section gets too worn down. It varies, obviously, but it's around 400 miles. As PP says, I *am* carrying a little excess weight though.

About 500 usually. Generally change when the heels wear down.

Ah WA - that could be what I've experienced recently. I didn't record the mileage properly on my first pair of trail flats so I had some leg niggles recently. New pair ordered. So what do people reckon should be the mileage limit on F-lite 195 trail flats? I use them for everything and run mainly off-road except for the getting there and hill intervals once a week with my tri club.

I work on the 500 mile " rule" as a guideline and change my shoes around there somewhere. I've still got a pair of Mizunos that have got 550 or so on them and I use for short treadie runs, and a pair of Zoots that are 480ish and about to retire (but I love them so they might go a bit beyond 500!).
