Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

How far do you run, before taking on liquid/food?

All my best 5K times have been recorded whilst absolutely hanging. I think it's to do with numbing to the pain.

Love the way this has turned into an endorsement of hangovers & running! Interesting thread tho - seems to be very personal, I have only recently started running regularly more than an hour for my long runs - at 9 miles-ish. I have taken a small bottle of dilute cherryactive with me for these and had a few sips each mile after mile 5, but then on Friday happily ran 7.8 miles without and didn't even think about it. Agree that running is a good cure for hangovers although can't say my times improve, but my mood definitely does!!

I don't get hangovers but most of my best races have come the morning after drinking moderately the night before.

Rule of thumb for me is to that I take water with me for anything over an hour, and a ge if its going to be over 13/14 miles, everyone is different tho'.

I don't take water or fuel for runs. I've run up to 24 mile training runs before breakfast, no water or gels.

Racing, I might take on some water in a half, but usually just enough to wet my mouth. Marathons I try to take on water/sports drink at some stage but I find they just slosh around and make me uncomfortable. I do need them for a marathon though so just got to deal with that.

I have only just started to have a jelly baby at about mile 8 of a 12-13 mile run, and have been amazed at the difference it makes - may be a placebo effect, but whatever, I get through that 9 mile o-my-god-I-can't- run-another-step wobble without a problem now. I take a little plastic bottle* of water with me but if it's hot I'm jsut as likely to pour that over my head than drink it.
* from a half marathon goody bag, it's meant for shotz but it's a good size to fit in my capri back pocket.

Similar to others' stories: I don't bother with water or gel on training runs of less than 10 miles or so. Racing, I'll carry a bumbag with gels for halves and maras, don't bother with them for shorter distances but will take on water if I feel like it.
