At school I avoided anything but enforced running of any distance running. I quite enjoyed 440 & 880 yds, but my main sport event was high jump which didn’t involve much running!
I had no thoughts of running until Sherry said that there was a new “jogging” club starting and that she and a friend were going to go along. Was I interested? I said that provided that I wasn’t going to be the only man amongst a group of women in the jogging suit fashion of the day I’d give it a try. I’d just given up smoking so though that it would be a good way to “clear my lungs out”.
Equipped with my brand new Levi denim trainers and some old gym shorts from school days, I ran a mile circuit, quite enjoyed it and have never really stopped. Sherry lasted about four weeks.

During October 2013, whilst recovering from a serious bout of near death man-flu and even though I could barely even walk a half mile, I decided I was going to challenge myself to run round Brownsea Island during a week long camp the following Easter ... and I'm still not entirely sure I fully sure whether I rose to the 'run' challenge as I Run Walked round it for either Wk 3 or 4 of my C25k program .

Back in ’84 during exam leave, I hung around with a friend who lived 4 doors up the road. We started doing exam revision together, and one day he suggested we went for a run. The route we chose was uphill to the next village and back (4km); on the way back down, we’d turn the corner into our road and sprint like maniacs to our finish line, which was the lamp-post outside my house. I don’t recall who would win, we never kept score and I suspect that if I ever won it would have been because he’d held back. The most important thing was – it was great fun! I was hooked and even after the summer was over, I’d still go for what felt like long runs at the weekend (in reality about 5km). I’ve had many breaks since, but have now been running again for 5 years.

Taking “early retirement” from a full-on career meant no more corporate gym rates and no more daily lunchtime mile swims. Instead time to bake - I put on 3 stone in two years!
I’d never run –at school I played in goal for hockey, but I needed to do something. A friend, who’d run Race4Life every year, challenged me to have a go, so I started C25K and did manage to “run” the whole “5K” that summer. Took 2½ years to got under 30 minutes . I've completed 4 marathons and my 50th birthday treat was a slow 50K along the Thames Path. I’d hoped to be running further and faster by now -two bouts of PF and life (caring for children and elderly parents) gets in the way.
Running’s still my stress buster, and I do have ambitions to put in a respectable time at one distance one day.

Rather boring story. I never really "started" running, I've always run even as a child, then through school into adulthood. I've never not run.
That means I've been running for almost 60 years, excluding toddler years, and I'm still enjoying it

Started running in about 1979, inspired by the running craze started by Jim Fixx's book. Ran London in 1982, was never very fast but did enjoy it. Had kids, gave up running, continued to eat as though still running. Hit 15 st in 2012 (I’m 5ft tall), decided to do something about it as I was turning into my own Mum, who currently takes around 27 pills a day to survive. Started walking, and using the gym – bike, then treadmill marching. One day I was walking home and had a little go at running. Surprised to find I could still actually do it.
Discovered parkrun in April 2013, worked up to a half mara in October, then in April 2014, first full mara in over 30 years in Blackpool (and knocked some 8 mins off my London time). Now doing All The Running to make up for the lost years.

Running? That? Oh, it started off as just a fad. Two of the lads at the rugby club thought they’d had a great idea when they suggested we run a half Marathon in the close season. They looked like proper rugby players – Mike was 6’ 5” and played second row for Yorkshire - while I was still the undistinguished grafter who’d got quite fit but had little perceivable talent. My first attempt to run non-stop around the 1st XV pitch ended up with me retching and turning that unhealthy red-in-the face colour.
Yet….soon it was four laps…. a majestic road mile – and ever longer circuits around Wakefield, logging double figure mileages. My addiction had begun and my first ‘hit’ was the Rotherham Prince of Wales half Marathon on a humid Wednesday evening in July 1987 with two thousand others for company. A lap of the track….home….but I forgot my time!

I'm not sure why I started running this time, I had certainly shown no aptitude for it in the previous 30 years.
One of my friends with several half marathons under their belt constantly kept trying to get me to do a Couch 2 5K, I did try, back in 2009, but stopped when faced with running for three minutes up the steepest road in Pontypridd. at their insistence I tried again a couple of years later, this time on a treadmill, but gave up after missing a single session in week 5.
It was doing a parkrun on a whim, and without telling anyone, in December 2015 that started me running. I did not enjoy it, but the desire for a free t-shirt got me back there week after week. I started running midweek to improve my times, from there it was a slippery slope to racing and addiction.
