Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Hard to believe there wasn't a thread for this already (unless I've forgotten). Here's mine, in 150 words:

My story starts with the last game of the cricket season in 2003, hitting a catch to a fielder instead of belting the ball over his head. I decided to "get down the gym" to rectify my puniness. The induction involved learning how to use the treadmill, which I felt sure would be the last time I would ever get on it. I discovered that I actually liked it, and built up to run my first ever mile, which felt like a huge achievement. A few months of boom and bust later, I tried running outside, and remember just how long it took my lungs to calm down after that first one mile wheeze. In 2004, work colleagues had decided to enter the Great South Run. By the time the race came around, the majority of them had pulled out with one excuse or another, but I was completely hooked.

What's your story?

I was 32 years old and no longer being selected as first choice for 'my' position in football. I was also overweight. So I decided to get fit. I'm in my early 30's and fit through football, therefore I 'must' be able to run for 30 minutes continuously. 27 slowly ground out minutes of running later and a quarter mile walk home told me that I was not fit. But I *could* run (slowly). My long run became 5.5 miles in just over an hour. Had I known it was not 6 miles, I would probably have given up! 13 and a half years later...

My boss at work thought it would be a good idea if a few of us did our local 10k. A colleague had run it before so thought that would encourage folks. Did run/walk 3 month training programme. By race day, it was only me doing it! I was chuffed to finished it in under an hour and had raised over £500.

Four years, two marathons and numerous other races later....! Only wish I’d taken up running sooner.

Watching the London Marathon with my kid brother from the comfort of my living room couch I boldly said “I’m going to do that one day.” He replied “no chance, you’re a fat has-been”. Several years later and after much supplementary goading, I toed the start-line. Still fat. Still chasing the inner athlete I believe to be there despite mounting evidence to the contrary. I run every day and even I really don’t know why. It builds its own momentum I suppose.

Runners are like real people only they’ve done something about it.

I started running in 2008 after the birth of my 3rd son! Up until then I just used to take part in Race for Life 5k every year from 2004 -2007. Initially it was to shift the baby weight but after buying my first garmin as a motivator I soon became addicted (although it took me 6 months to realise I was supposed to let it pick up the satellite signal !!) It wasn’t long before I booked my first 10k then half marathon , found Fetcheveryone, joined a running club and have never looked back. Although I’d call myself a triathlete now not a Runner (and ive not been counting words oops)

A complete non-runner with middle age creeping up on me, I took a notion to run a marathon - THE Marathon - for charity, and I went out and learned to run. I may not have discovered a talent for running, but I got fast enough to outrun middle age.

I was not a sporty schoolboy, the only team I got into was the rugby team because fat kid = prop forward material.

I was a “jogger” very briefly in my late teens but stopped when I had some kidney problems which I was told were caused by the “jogging” jiggling my giblets. I must have been doing it wrong.

Many years later, I woke one January morning feeling fat, unhealthy and generally knackered. I pulled out a pair of old “gym” trainers and ran round the block. It was a little over a mile, it hurt like hell and I thought I was going to die. Two days later I did it again, slightly easier and slightly faster. The following year I did two half-maras, joined a local new parkrun and started doing BMF as well. The year after that I ran 5 marathons.
