Quick q on here. I have a friend who has had a hip replacement after a traumatic event and has been told to give up competitive running. Considering they were ironman fit and pushing for AG trophies whats the opinion of people who have had hips replaced on what level you can run at following?

Hi Rich, I think it’s perfectly possible to compete at a high level after a hip replacement and I’ve certainly heard of people who have done Ironman after one. Provided the rehab has been done diligently and the surgeon was skilful the hip should be as good as your natural one. I was told to expect 5% less flexibility and that has proved to be the case but I’m older and had had an impingement for many years so was already impacted by that. A younger person may well not have that experience.

There’s an interesting FB group called hiprunners, mostly Americans but almost all of them have success stories about competing after surgery

My consultant told me it was possible, one of his patients was back marathon running, but that the life of the hip will be reduced. But he was then left to guess by how much.

And I think it's difficult to give an estimate for the lifespan of a replacement joint anyway. When I had my resurfacing in 2003 my consultant had only done a couple of hundred of them so relatively small number. The estimate at the time was it might last about 14 or 15 years*. It's still going strong after loads of races, including 2 marathons and 50+ half marathons. * and since my op it's been found that the failure rate is so high, they generally wouldn't recommend a resurfacing for women. |

I don’t think any research has been done into the lifespan of a replacement hip in an active runner! They don’t want to get sued is all
